Despite repeated orders from the government and the courts banning the use of students for cleaning school toilets, a shocking incident has emerged from a government school in Yelahanka.
A viral video shows students from classes 7, 8, and 9 cleaning human waste that had overflowed from a toilet pit inside the school premises of a government pre-university and high school in Yelahanka.
Belthuru resident Paramesh has lodged a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission and the Child Rights Commission against the school principal Kannamma and Kannada teacher Shivakumar.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 8. The viral video clearly shows students manually cleaning the overflowing pit. It is alleged that principal Kannamma and teacher Shivakumar forced the students to do the task. The complaint emphasizes that such work will adversely affect the children’s health and demands strict legal action against the responsible staff.
Speaking to the media, Parmesh said he confronted the principal about the video. In response, Kannamma allegedly said, “Just like they clean at home, children should clean their own toilets at school too.” She also claimed to have obtained consent letters from the students’ parents for this.
Parmesh called this act a disgrace to civil society and demanded strict legal action against both the school staff and, if found guilty, the consenting parents as well.
