Send Push
U.S. Senator JD Vance , chosen by Republican Donald Trump as his vice-presidential running mate, faced off against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz , selected by Democrat Kamala Harris as her running mate, in a nationally televised debate on Tuesday. As the likely final debate of the 2024 presidential campaign , it carries added significance with the Nov. 5 election fast approaching.

What the polls say

CBS News , which hosted the debate, released a snap poll of viewers shortly after the event, revealing that 42% believed Vance had won, while 41% favoured Walz, and 17% thought it was a tie.

The poll also showed a rise in favourability for both candidates, with Vance's rating increasing from 40% to 49%, and Walz's rising from 52% to 60%.

Similarly, CNN conducted a post-debate instant poll, which had Vance narrowly leading Walz 51% to 49%. The CNN poll also highlighted a favourability boost for both, with Walz’s positive rating going up from 46% to 59%, and Vance’s improving from 30% to 41%.

Politico/Focaldata's snap poll of likely voters showed an even split, 50-50, on who won the debate. However, Independent voters gave Walz a 57-42 advantage.

What the markets say

In the betting markets, Vance was seen as the debate's winner. On the crypto-based betting platform Polymarket , Vance was given a 73% chance of being declared the winner in post-debate opinion polls, compared to 27% for Walz. This represented a complete reversal from before the debate when Walz had a 70% chance of being judged the winner.

Bookmakers in the election betting markets gave former President Donald Trump a slight boost in his chances of winning. Most of the shift occurred earlier in the day, likely due to favourable polling for the Republican in Georgia and North Carolina. Vice President Kamala Harris, however, maintained a slight edge, with bookmakers giving her a 50.3% chance of winning in November, compared to 48.9% for Trump.
