Jayanta ‘Jay’ Bhattacharya took office as the 18th Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Tuesday, Apr. 1. Nominated by President Donald Trump for the position in Nov. 2024, and confirmed by the Senate on March 25, Dr. Bhattacharya, is set to oversee the nation’s medical research agency. He has replaced Matthew J. Memoli, who served as the Acting NIH Director since Jan. 22, 2025.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed that, “Under Dr. Bhattacharya’s leadership, NIH will restore its commitment to gold-standard science.” “I’m excited to work with Dr. Bhattacharya to ensure NIH research aligns with our Administration’s priorities — especially tackling the chronic disease epidemic and helping to Make America Healthy Again,” he added.
Dr. Bhattacharya, through his role as the head of NIH aims to bring the President’s Make America Healthy Again dream true. “Chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity continue to cause poor health outcomes in every community across the United States. Novel biomedical discoveries that enhance health and lengthen life are more vital than ever to our country’s future,” Dr. Bhattacharya added.
After taking office, Dr. Bhattacharya stated that the the way forward is to ‘say what we know honestly, say what we don't know honestly, and give excellent advice based on gold standard science’. Born in Kolkata in a Bengali Hindu family, Dr. Bhattacharya earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Stanford University. Following this he earned a doctorate in medicine and a PhD in economics from the same university.

A renowned physician, epidemiologist, researcher, public health policy expert, and health economist, Dr. Bhattacharya worked as a professor in the medical school at Stanford University, California. His research focused on population aging and chronic disease, particularly on the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
Dr. Bhattacharya made headlines during the pandemic, when he co-authored the ‘Great Barrington Declaration’. The declaration urged governments to lift lockdown restrictions on young and healthy people while focusing protection measures on the elderly. “We have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing Covid-19 policies.”
