NEW DELHI: Junior doctors on Friday said that they are calling off the protest due to flood situation in West Bengal but the agitations over RG Kar rape and murder case will continue in all medical colleges & hospitals.

During a press conference outside CBI office in Kolkata, West Bengal Junior Doctors Front said that they will serve in flood-affected areas from Saturday.

"We are stopping our sit-in protest due to the flood situation. We will serve in flood-affected areas from tomorrow but our protest will not stop. We will continue this in all medical colleges & hospitals," the doctors' body said.

"We will see till the next Supreme Court hearing. If we don't get justice, we will start our protest again," it added.

To mark the withdrawal of their 10-day dharna near the state health department headquarters – ' Swasthya Bhawan ' – the medics organised the procession from their protest site to the CGO Complex, a distance of around 4 km, demanding a quick wrap-up of investigation into the case.

This comes a day after a general body meeting of the protesting doctors decided to call off their strike after 41 days and announced their decision to return to duty from Saturday.

According to the doctors, emergency services will resume, but outpatient department (OPD) services will remain suspended.

The government had been urging the medics to withdraw their 'cease work', which has been ongoing since August 9, when the body of a trainee doctor was found at the hospital.

The incident on August 9 involved the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. It led to the arrest of a Kolkata Police civic volunteer and sparked widespread protests by doctors and citizens.

The Calcutta High Court subsequently directed the CBI to investigate both the murder and financial irregularities at the institution.
