NEW DELHI: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a fiery speech at an election rally in Mandu, Jharkhand, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. Kharge accused the ruling party of prioritizing the interests of the wealthy over the welfare of common citizens and labeled Modi as the 'jhootho ke sardar' (head of liars)."
Kharge highlighted unfulfilled promises made by PM Modi, saying, "PM Modi promised two crore jobs annually, Rs 15 lakh in every bank account, bringing back black money, and doubling farmers' income. None of these promises were kept."
He also accused the BJP of copying Congress' welfare schemes, citing the example of Karnataka's 'Bhagya Lakshmi' scheme, which provides Rs 2,000 to women. "Modi ji is replicating our schemes everywhere because they have no roadmap of their own," Kharge said.
Jharkhand’s rich resources at stake
Kharge claimed the BJP's interest in Jharkhand is primarily driven by a desire to exploit its rich mineral resources. "The BJP is eying Jharkhand's 'black gold' (coal) and seeking to plunder its mineral resources. Their intention is not the welfare of the people but to serve the interests of a few wealthy individuals."
He accused the BJP of attempting to unseat the current tribal chief minister, Hemant Soren, adding, "No one can dare remove Hemant Soren. He will be the next chief minister of Jharkhand."
Wealth disparity and governance
Kharge criticized the BJP for exacerbating wealth inequality, stating that 5% of the rich control 60% of the country’s wealth, while 50% of the poor own only 3%. He accused Modi of waiving Rs 16 lakh crore for the wealthy but failing to provide relief to the poor, farmers, and Dalits.
Kharge demanded immediate clearance of Rs 1.36 lakh crore in coal dues to Jharkhand, emphasizing that this revenue could significantly aid the state's development.

Kharge also accused PM Modi of centralizing power within a small circle, during a recent statement addressing governance and constitutional rights.
Kharge remarked, "PM Modi doesn't see the good things the others have. He sees only two big people and Amit Shah. No one can speak in the cabinet. Only PM Modi can speak, and Amit Shah will do. All the powers are with him." This comment highlighted concerns over the concentration of decision-making authority within the Modi government.
In a broader reflection on India's democratic foundations, Kharge emphasized the Congress party's pivotal role in securing rights for marginalized communities. "A few people forget that the reservation that has been given, be it to SC, ST or OBC, or the rights that have been constitutionally given - for this, the credit goes to those who gave us the freedom - Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Babasaheb Ambedkar," he said.

With assembly elections scheduled for November 13 and 20, Kharge urged voters to remain vigilant against the BJP’s tactics and false promises, positioning the Congress as the true guardian of Jharkhand’s resources and welfare. The vote count is set for November 23.
