BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Wednesday dubbed Nationalist Congress Party ( Ajit Pawar faction) candidate from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, Nawab Malik , as Dawood's agent and accused him of "betraying" the country.
"Nawab Malik is a terrorist who tried to break India into pieces. He is Dawood's agent and Ajit Pawar's NCP has betrayed the country by giving ticket to Nawab Malik. On behalf of Mahayuti, Eknath Shinde's candidate Suresh Krishna Patil (Bullet Patil) of the Bharatiya Janata Party started campaigning yesterday," news agency ANI quoted Somaiya as saying.
The Mahayuti alliance faced complications when Nawab Malik submitted his nomination on Tuesday, as they had previously announced Shiv Sena's Suresh Krishna Patil as their official candidate for the same constituency.
Ashish Shelar, BJP Mumbai president, confirmed that his party would not support Nawab Malik's candidacy. He emphasized their consistent opposition to Malik, citing allegations of connections with Dawood Ibrahim, while acknowledging their alliance partners' right to select candidates.
Nawab Malik, who previously served two terms as MLA from Anushakti Nagar, decided to run as an independent candidate from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar after the NCP denied him a ticket due to BJP's opposition. His daughter, Sana Malik, is now contesting from Anushakti Nagar as an NCP candidate (Ajit Pawar).
The Maharashtra assembly elections will take place on November 20, with vote counting for all 288 seats scheduled for November 23.
