Sony has been a long-time leader in the audio world and it is known for shaking up the truly wireless earphone market in India. Known for their premium WF series with top-notch sound, noise cancellation, and exceptional comfort, Sony is now bringing those high-end features to a more affordable price point with the new WF-C510 earbuds. This move aims to capture the attention of budget-conscious consumers in India's booming truly wireless market.
Launched at a price of Rs 4,990, the Sony WF-C510 TWS earphones come in Blue, Yellow, Black and White colours. We got the Blue option. By offering a compelling blend of performance and affordability, Sony is poised to challenge the dominance of desi brands in this competitive segment. We put these earphones to the test in real-world scenarios. Here's what we discovered.
Design
The Sony WF-C510 TWS earphones’ Blue colour option looks pretty and is one of the lighter shades of blue. While attractive, it tends to reveal dirt and grime more readily which means that you have to be prepared to clean it more often to keep it looking its best. During our time, we had to clean it at least once a day.
Both the case and earphones have a paper-like texture, which feels great but cleaning it often requires much rubbing. Both of them feel sturdy and well-built. The case has a pill-shaped design with a flat bottom and a lid that has a tactical response when opened and closed. The USB Type-C port and Bluetooth button are on the back while the front has a pin-hole-type LED.
The earbuds have the same underlying design as its other earphones – compact earbuds with a nozzle that are fitted with ear gels and go right into the ear canals. They feature a rounded design with a matte finish, and their flat, wider surface provides a comfortable and secure touchpoint for easy control. The earbuds are lightweight and their blob-shape helps in a secure fit.
When in ear, the earbuds don’t protrude much out of ears. Each earbud surface serves as a button to control playback and calling. While the buttons on the Sony WF-C510 TWS earphones provide a satisfying click and tactile feedback, there's a slight delay between pressing a button and the corresponding action taking place. For example, when we press the button, there is a noticeable lag.
While some competitive products come with touch-based control, Sony has executed the button-based concept well and reminds us of Jabra’s TWS earphones.
Sound and other features
With their 6mm driver units, the Sony WF-C510 TWS earphones deliver a well-balanced sound profile across the entire frequency range – from deep lows to crisp highs. This balanced tuning was particularly evident while listening to our favourite downtempo tracks, where the layered music was easily differentiable. The vocals sounded natural and the instruments were well-defined.
To evaluate the audio performance, we put the sony WF-C510 through a rigorous test across various music genres and the results were impressive. First was one of our favourites: Ajna from Suduaya. The track has a prominent and repetitive bassline, which the earphones captured really well. There was enough separation between the multiple guitars playing, thanks to the quality of the midrange and treble.
We then moved to upbeat music like Rasputin by Boney M. and the vocals sound solid as well as expressive. High-tempo (techno and psytrance) songs like Deep Jungle Walk by Astrix also sounded well. The bass is refined so it provides a ‘light thump’ and subtle at the same time so it does not overpower other instruments and vocals.
Overall, the earbuds carry Sony's audio heritage forward by obtaining rhythmic precision and handling complex music pieces easily, however, there are some areas where we were left wanting for more. For example, the punch of the bass.
That extra “oomph” in the bass can significantly enhance the impact and enjoyment of certain music genres. Additionally, the overall soundstage could be wider and more immersive, providing a richer and more nuanced listening experience.
The Sony WF-C510 earphones come with one of the most desired features – Ambient Sound mode. Just like in the premium offerings, the Sound Connect app provided us greater control over how our music sounded, and even the degree of sound that seeps in when we want to remain aware of our surroundings. Calling is also A+ on the earphones and we didn’t experience any problems when using the earphones for calling.
They offer IPX4 water resistance and each earbud can be used independently with the other one can be put in the case to juice up. The features that didn’t trickle down to the affordable option are active noise cancellation, wear detection and low-latency mode. However, the price justifies the overall performance.
Battery
Sony claims up to 11 hours of battery life, however, it's important to note that this figure is achieved with certain features disabled. In our real-world testing, which involved extended listening sessions of six to seven hours, we found the battery life to be more than adequate. We didn’t reach out for the charger too often as the charging case provided additional charge till we got to the comfort of our homes.
Verdict
Sony's WF-C510 earbuds successfully deliver a compelling blend of performance and affordability. The audio quality, a hallmark of Sony's audio legacy, shines through with a well-balanced sound profile that handles various genres with ease. We feel the bass could pack a bit more punch and the soundstage could be wider, the overall listening experience is enjoyable.
The inclusion of Ambient Sound mode adds to the versatility, the call quality is excellent and the comfortable fit enhances the user experience. Battery life is commendable, providing ample listening time for most users. At a price of Rs 4,990, the Sony WF-C510 is a worthy contender in the segment for a well-rounded audio experience.
