IBM acquires Kubecost, the cost optimisation startup with Indian-origin co-founder

IBM has further expanded its FinOps portfolio with the acquisition of Kubecost , a leading startup specializing in Kubernetes cost management. This move follows the company's significant investments in the FinOps space, including the $4.3 billion acquisition of Apptio in 2023.

Founded in 2019, Kubecost is based in San Francisco, CA and is led by Co-founder and CEO, Webb Brown; and co-founder and CTO, Ajay Tripathy .

Kubecost's technology helps organizations to effectively monitor and optimize their Kubernetes clusters, ensuring efficient resource utilization and cost control. Its focus on efficiency aligns well with IBM's broader strategy to provide comprehensive IT and FinOps solutions to enterprises. The acquisition of Kubecost is expected to strengthen IBM's FinOps Suite, combining the capabilities of Cloudability , Turbonomic , and Kubecost. Additionally, there is potential for deeper integration with IBM's OpenShift enterprise platform.

While the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, Kubecost's previous funding rounds, including a $25 million Series A led by Coatue Management, highlight the company's strong market position and growth potential.

Webb Brown, co-founder and CEO of Kubecost, expressed excitement about the merger, stating that it will accelerate the company's mission of delivering end-to-end cost management solutions. Kubecost's open-source project, OpenCost, has gained significant traction within the cloud native community and will likely play a crucial role in IBM's future offerings.
