GURGAON: A 35-year-old woman who was allegedly influenced by an occult practitioner threw her two-year-old son into a canal in Faridabad on Sunday. Both were arrested on Monday.

Cops, firefighters and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are searching for the toddler in the Agra Canal but have not found any trace of the body so far.

Police said passersby witnessed the incident on BPTP bridge and alerted them on Sunday night.

BPTP station house officer Arvind Kumar rushed to the spot, where a crowd had gathered around the woman. On enquiring, the woman said she was a resident of Sainik Colony. Cops got her husband's phone number and called him.

The husband, Kapil, who works for a private firm in the city, told police the couple had two children – a 14-year-old girl and the two-year-old boy.

Kapil said his wife was mentally ill and was also influenced by an occult practitioner.

"According to Kapil, the woman used to claim that her son was ‘possessed', or a ‘djinn's child', which the occultist had told her," SHO Kumar said.

Kapil said his wife had been making the claims since the boy was 8 months old. "She used to say that the boy will bring bad omen to the family," Kumar said. Preliminary investigation indicates it was the first time that the 35-year-old tried to harm the boy.

An FIR was registered against the woman and occultist Meeta (40), a native of Murshidabad in West Bengal, under sections 103(1) for murder and 61(2) for criminal conspiracy of BNS.

"Meeta lives in EWS colony in Sector 48. Her husband died in 2015, after which she became a tantrik. Both of the accused are currently being interrogated. Further investigation will reveal the intention of the crime," the SHO said.
