ERODE: Doctors at the Thanthai Periyar Government General Hospital in Erode removed a safety pin from the throat of a 47-year-old man on Friday.
P Kanniappan of the Karungalpalayam area in Erode city accidentally ingested the safety pin following an epileptic seizure. His family rushed him to hospital. An x-ray revealed that the safety pin was lodged between his vocal cords and food pipe (esophagus), said head of the laparoscopic department in the hospital Dr Sridhar.
The medical team opted for a careful procedure to avoid harming the patient. They extracted the safety pin from Kanniappan's throat in an hour-long keyhole surgery. “He is now recovering well,” Dr Sridhar said.
The procedure, which would have cost Rs 30,000 in a private hospital, was performed free of cost at the GH, Dr Sridhar added.
