RUDRAPUR: An eight-year-old girl was killed after being run over by a tractor-trolley engaged in illegal mining near Palka Chaud area in Gadarpur, Udham Singh Nagar, on Thursday morning.

Praveena Rani, a class 2 student of Sunshine Public School , was on her way to school with her father Pritam Singh, a farmer, and younger brother Pawan Singh (6) when the incident occurred.

An eyewitness said the family was travelling on a scooter when it was hit by the tractor-trolley loaded with mining material on a poorly maintained link road. As the riders fell to the ground, the trolley ran over the girl. “The trolley passed over her head. It was horrifying,” said Resham Singh, an eyewitness.

“This road isn’t fit for walking, let alone for heavy vehicles carrying mining loads. The police are turning a blind eye to illegal mining activities,” said Santosh Kumar, a neighbour of the deceased.

Another local, Lakhan Singh, added, “The tractor-trolleys use the single-lane road dangerously, and police have failed to act despite repeated complaints.”

Gadarpur SHO Jasvir Chauhan said, “The girl’s body has been sent for autopsy. The tractor-trolley has been seized, while the driver is absconding. A search is underway to nab him.”

Gadarpur MLA Arvind Pandey said that an urgent meeting with PWD officials will be called to repair the dilapidated roads in the constituency.
