Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alerts Issued for Northeast India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Thunderstorm Alerts for multiple regions of India, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and squally weather conditions. These warnings, valid over the next two days, cover northeastern states, parts of West Bengal, coastal Tamil Nadu, and other regions.

Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alerts

Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with precipitation exceeding 12 cm, is very likely at isolated locations across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Additionally, heavy rainfall (≥7 cm) is expected in parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Kerala & Mahe. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for potential waterlogging, flash floods, and travel disruptions.

Thunderstorm Alerts and Lightning

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are predicted in regions such as West Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and several northeastern states, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, Telangana, and Interior Karnataka are also under alert. Lightning strikes pose risks to human safety, so residents should stay indoors and avoid open spaces during these storms.

Thunderstorm Alerts: Coastal and Maritime Warnings

In the coastal areas, squally weather conditions with wind speeds ranging from 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are expected over the Gulf of Mannar, as well as the northeastern and adjoining northwestern parts of the Bay of Bengal. Similar conditions are forecasted over the east-central Bay of Bengal, posing dangers to maritime activities. Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into these regions due to the hazardous conditions.

Thunderstorm Alerts: Day 2 Forecast (04 October)

The forecast for the following day remains concerning for several regions. Isolated places in Gangetic West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Tamil Nadu may experience heavy rainfall (≥7 cm). Thunderstorm activity is expected to persist across West Bengal & Sikkim, east Bihar, northeastern states, and southern regions like Kerala & Mahe and Interior Karnataka.

Fishermen are once again advised to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal due to squally winds reaching speeds up to 55 kmph. Preventive measures must be taken to ensure safety in these regions.

• Secure loose objects around homes that strong winds could blow away.
• Avoid travel in flood-prone areas and take caution near water bodies.
