Donald Trump has been ridiculed after apparently getting his geography muddled during a press conference, mistakenly stating that he was travelling to Russia to meet Vladimir Putin on Friday, when the meeting is actually scheduled to take place in Alaska.
The blunder occurred while Trump was addressing the Oval Office about his pledged crackdown on crime in Washington.
"It's embarrassing for me to be up here. You know, I'm going to see Putin," he stated. "I'm going to Russia on Friday. I don't like being up here, talking about how unsafe and how dirty and disgusting this once beautiful capital was."
This comes as Donald Trump deviates from his speech on crime to embark on a rambling tirade.
The clip quickly went viral on X, with users lambasting the president for his geographical error. "Wait, did he give Alaska back to Putin already?" one user queried, reports The Mirror US.
"He already handed alaska over to russia," another chimed in. "Wait, so Alaska is now Russia? ? ?" one person quote-tweeted.
Another user commented: "Wait a second; has the Trump-Putin summit location been rearranged or has the Trump administration just announced they've ceded Alaska to Russia?" Yet another declared, "You're embarrassing our country."
Russian nationalists are likely to revel in the slip-up.
The gaffe could provide Russian nationalists, who have persistently campaigned for Alaska's return, with cause for jubilation.
Putin has faced subtle pressure for years to reclaim Alaska for Russia, yet he hasn't yielded - there's no indication he's even considering such an action.
Nevertheless, the Alaska meeting stands out as extraordinary since it's set to take place on territory that was formerly Russian.
Alaska was purchased by the U.S. for several million dollars back in 1867.
This will also represent Putin's first journey to American territory in a decade.
The two world leaders are anticipated to address the conflict in Ukraine, with expectations that some type of ceasefire deal might emerge from their discussions - a gathering that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is conspicuously not scheduled to join.
Trump condemns Washington crime wave.
In recent days, via his Truth Social platform, Trump has unleashed scathing criticism of crime figures in the nation's capital, claiming that levels are spiralling out of control and being driven by teenage gang members.
"Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control. Local 'youths' and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16-years-old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released," Trump declared.
"They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it's going to happen now!". "The Law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these 'minors' as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14," the president demanded.
"The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs."
He continued by declaring that "Washington, D.C., must be safe, clean, and beautiful for all Americans and, importantly, for the World to see."
He added, "If D.C. doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they're not going to get away with it anymore.
"Perhaps it should have been done a long time ago, then this incredible young man, and so many others, would not have had to go through the horrors of Violent Crime. If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!".
Trump shared a shocking image of former DOGE employee "Big Balls," showing him bruised and battered after an alleged attack.
He was apparently targeted during an attempted vehicle theft.
Trump publicised the Monday morning press briefing on his Truth Social platform through a series of increasingly passionate posts.
"On Monday a Press Conference will be held at the White House which will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.," he declared in one message. "It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World. It will soon be one of the safest! ! ! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT."
In another post, Trump targeted the homeless population in the capital, outlining his policy plans bluntly: "The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital."
He maintained his assault on what he branded "criminals" in the city, declaring: "The Criminals, you don't have to move out. We're going to put you in jail where you belong. It's all going to happen very fast, just like the Border. We went from millions pouring in, to ZERO in the last few months. This will be easier - Be prepared! There will be no 'MR. NICE GUY.' We want our Capital BACK. Thank you for your attention to this matter!".
Trump's third message spotlighted the conference's focus on "beautification.
"It will not only involve ending the Crime, Murder, and Death in our Nation's Capital, but will also be about Cleanliness and the General Physical Renovation and Condition of our once beautiful and well-maintained Capital," he penned.
Trump utilised the announcement to lambast Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, with whom he's been battling over his reluctance to slash the federal interest rate.
He pointed to the Federal Reserve renovation project as evidence of government squandering, maintaining it could have been completed swiftly and for less money. "We are not going to allow people to spend $3.1 Billion Dollars on fixing up a building, like the Federal Reserve, which could have been done in a far more elegant and time sensitive manner for $50 to $100 Million Dollars," Trump declared.
"The Renovation would have actually been better, and we would have saved $3 Billion Dollars, Traffic Jams, and never-ending Construction."
Trump also took aim at DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, describing her as a "good person" who has been afforded numerous opportunities to address the city's crime crisis but has fallen short.
He criticised her for failing to reduce crime statistics, declaring, "The Crime Numbers get worse, and the City only gets dirtier and less attractive.
"The American Public is not going to put up with it any longer. Just like I took care of the Border, where you had ZERO Illegals coming across last month, from millions the year before, I will take care of our cherished Capital, and we will make it, truly, GREAT AGAIN!" Trump declared.
"Before the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that again. Thank you for your attention to this matter - See you tomorrow at 10 A.M.!".
Merely hours before addressing the public, Trump's latest Truth Social post echoed his earlier remarks.
"Washington, D.C. will be LIBERATED today! Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR. I will, MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN!" he declared. "The days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people, are OVER! I quickly fixed the Border (ZERO ILLEGALS in last 3 months! ), D.C. is next! ! ! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT."
Several sources, including The Associated Press, have been informed by US officials that Trump is mulling deploying 1,000 National Guard troops to Washington to tackle the supposed crime crisis.
