April is great time for garden enthusiasts to start adding some pretty flowers into their gardens, and thanks to the springtime climate, many green-fingered Brits will be heading outdoors this week.
However, working out the best time to plant your bulbs can be a tricky task. Fortunately, TikTok's gardening guru Ish, who posts as , has compiled a list of the top three flowers perfect for April planting.
1. AquilegiasTopping Ish's suggestions are aquilegias, also known as granny's bonnets or columbines. Ish explained why these are an excellent choice: "Now these can reach up to 60-80cm tall, like full sun or partial sun, and if you regularly deadhead them, will continue to flower all throughout summer. So super easy."
The beauty of aquilegias extends beyond their visual charm; they can be put in flower beds or in pots. Plus, aquilegias are food for butterflies, so planting these pretty flowers will often bring more winged creatures into your garden.
2. DahliasDahlias claim the second spot on Ish's list, and he suggested: "Now there are hundreds and hundreds of different varieties, so pick a colour that works for you."
Ish also shared his tips for growing dahlias: "They do fantastic in full sun and a well drained soil. And if you've got a little bit of a risk of frost, hold back for a couple weeks.
"But if it's nice and warm like it is here, plant them in the ground and they'll be absolutely fine."
3. LiliesHe then recommended a flower that will bring a dramatic flair to your garden beds, adding: "If you're looking for a showstopper in your garden, then go for something like lilies. These can reach up to 3ft tall."
For gardening novices eager to try their hand at planting lilies, Ish offered some guidance: "plant these about 6 inches deep so they've got a good amount of space to anchor them in place and they'll look fantastic.
"These do well in full sun and also partial sun. So a great variety for your borders. Getting these three planted in your garden right now is a sure-fire way to get colour in the summer."
He also advised on the importance of deadheading your lilies regularly to promote growth throughout the summer, ensuring a vibrant garden in the warmer months.
However, pet owners should be careful when planting lilies, as they can be toxic to animals. It's wise to plant them out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children.
