Liverpool get fresh VAR verdict in feisty Atletico Madrid tie - 'Absolutely no way'

Ally McCoist has expressed a firm opinion on Atletico Madrid's contentious goal against Liverpool, claiming there's "absolutely no way" it should have been allowed. The visitors netted through Marcos Llorente in the first half's added time, bringing the score to 2-1.

Liverpool had an ideal start to the match with goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, putting them two goals ahead within the first six minutes at Anfield. However, Llorente's goal halved the deficit for Atletico. The goal was not without controversy. As Llorente connected with the ball, Antoine Griezmann was offside and seemed to obstruct Alisson's view.

Liverpool's goalkeeper immediately protested to the referee, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) did not intervene to disallow the goal, leaving many baffled.

As the second half of the match commenced, co-commentator McCoist voiced his thoughts on the decision during his commentary on TNT Sport.

"There's absolutely no way it should have stood, he said. " he declared. "Me and you [commentator Darren Fletcher] had a good chat about it at half time. If the ball goes in the opposite corner, then yes, it should be a goal.

"But as soon as the ball goes behind Griezmann, he is affecting the goalkeeper, because he is blocking the sight of the ball for the goalkeeper; therefore, in my opinion, the goal should not have stood."

Commentator Darren Fletcher simply responded with: "I agree wholeheartedly with what you just said."

The goal wasn't the only contentious decision made by the referee in the first half. Liverpool were given a penalty for handball at 2-0, but a VAR review revealed that there was no contact with the defender's hand and the decision was subsequently reversed.

Virgil van Dijk then broke Atletico hearts late on, scoring to send Anfield into raptures and claim a 3-2 win, their latest dramatic winner this season.

Robertson joked that now in his thirties, he does not want to be winning games in such fashion.

"We need to get back to winning a bit simpler and easier," he told TNT. "The assistant manager turned to me when Virgil put it in and said he's getting too old for it, so I can't imagine what the fans are like. It's a great thing to have, being able to keep going until the end. When you're 2-0 up and playing so well in the first half it should've been a more comfortable night."
