With energy bills rising and Brits still feeling the cost of living crisis, winter can be dreaded by many. Whilst the heating may not be on just yet, clothes will need to start being dried indoors due to the cooler weather.
Whether you have a tumble dryer or not, using one can be expensive as they consume large amounts of energy. While they are useful in the winter months, there are other ways to dry clothes, according to the experts at Lenor. This involves simple air drying with a couple of nifty hacks to speed up drying laundry.
Air drying clothing has numerous benefits, including reducing energy consumption, saving money and keeping clothes fresh.
The experts said: "Air-drying clothes inside can be a great way to save money on your electricity bill and preserve the quality of your clothes.
"But how do you dry clothes without a dryer? If you don't have a dryer to use and the weather isn't suitable for outdoor drying, don't worry. There are plenty of methods for air-drying clothes inside that are just as effective."
The experts recommended giving your clothes an extra spin cycle before getting them out of the washing machine to remove excess water and speed up the process.
It can also help to use an external source of wind, such as a table or room fan. This can help to circulate the air and dry clothes "much faster".
The experts added: "Towel dry your clothes before hanging them to air dry to remove as much moisture as possible.
"Hang your clothes on a drying rack or airer, providing sufficient gaps and spaces between clothes for proper air circulation."
If an airer is loaded with too many clothes, it means the clothes will take longer to dry and may even result in musty smells."
The pros said: "For the best results, don't leave your clothes in the machine for too long after washing and remove excess water from your clothes before hanging them to dry.
"Shake and smooth out your clothes before hanging them up, too, as this can prevent wrinkles."
When washing shirts, it's important to hang them on hangers to keep their shape and avoid wrinkles, which will help speed up the drying process.
If you have the heating on, make sure the airer is as close to the heat source as possible.
Opening windows can also help while the heating is on, preventing excess humidity and improving air circulation.
