Only Connect viewers applauded one player, despite his team ending up on the losing side.

Presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell returned with a new episode of the BBC Two programme on Monday (November 11), which saw the Four Opinions take on the Cat Cows.

As per usual, both teams relied on patience, lateral thinking and sheer inspiration to make connections between four things that appeared at first not to be linked.

The two teams put on an impressive display throughout the programme as they headed into the final round with just one point separating them.

The Four Opinions, made up of Jacob, Aron and captain Rafi, looked to be the more comfortable team as the missing vowels round kicked off.

The teams were tasked with working out the names of books with titles containing school subjects, film titles containing school subjects, with the Four Opinions extending their lead to three points.

However, the Cat Cows, consisting of Iona, Molly and Max, pulled it back when they were faced with guessing songs by Girls Aloud., with team captain Max answering all four correctly.

The final category was jobs at a school which eventually ended the two teams in a tie-break. Team captains Rafi and Max were tasked with working out the single missing vowels clue - and it was Rafi who got the correct answer the quickest.

Although the Four Opinions came out on top, Victoria reminded the players that no one was being knocked out today as they both won their heats.

However, despite the Cat Cows losing in dramatic form, viewers at home were hugely impressed with Max's knowledge of girl band Girls Aloud as they took to social media to praise him.

One wrote: "Who would have thought that an in depth knowledge of Girls Aloud might nearly get you a victory on #OnlyConnect."

Another penned: "Those Girls Aloud song titles a gift to Max McG! Well done to all. I love the squashed up word round," as a third declared: "Strong Girls Aloud knowledge by Max."

"Max on certainly knew his #girlsaloud," added a fourth as another shared: "Come on Max."
