A BBC Breakfast guest has issued a warning after a devastating accident left him paralysed.
Citing the risks of dangerous driving, presenters Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell introduced guest Seth Marks, who shared his story about an accident three years ago.
"There's a warning today about the number of people who have been caught not wearing seatbelts," Jon began.
Sarah continued: "One police force installed AI cameras to catch driving offences and found that 6,000 people in a year were breaking seatbelt rules."
Three years ago, Seth, 21, made two decisions that he has been regretting and will likely do for the rest of his life.
After getting into a car with a drunk driver and failing to wear a seatbelt, his life changed in a matter of seconds.
"It doesn't take much at all, you make one bad decision and you can pay the rest of your life for it," he said.
His mum Julie told the BBC about the call she never wanted to receive at 2am, and how it changed their family.
Seth has been left paralysed from the waist down, saying: "I struggle to do anything for myself now, I need 24-hour care."
"I can't do any of that for myself now," he went on.
Seth also experiences muscle spasms that throw him from his chair, meaning he now has to wear a seatbelt to keep him safe.
"Wearing seatbelts is not something that should be ignored. I really strongly believe that if I were wearing a seatbelt during the accident, I wouldn't have sustained such bad injuries," he said.
Seth, who now has to shower in the kitchen and is often in pain, believes the simplest act of wearing his seatbelt would have changed his life.
His mum added: "Young people see somebody like Seth and say, 'This is what happens'. Everything changes, not just Seth's life but my life, and everything you want for your children goes out the window."
BBC Breakfast is available to watch from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
