Antiques Roadshow's Fiona Bruce amused as 100-year-old codebreaker makes 'saucy' remark

host Fiona Bruce couldn't help but laugh when a 100-year-old Second World War hero made a suggestive comment.

The iconic daytime series took a break from valuing extraordinary and unusual items to take fans back in time to when the world was taken over by the Second World War.

To help with the war effort, Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire became the main centre for Allied code-breaking, mostly employing women to take on this very important task.

For the BBC special, Fiona was fortunate to speak to former Bletchley Park code-breaker, 100-year-old Hazel Halter, who opened up about her life during that time.

And while it was all about contributing to the war effort during the day, they did manage to have some fun too.

"So paint a picture for me of what life was like here at Bletchley Park", Fiona began.

"You've got all the different huts here, what was the atmosphere like?"

Hazel explained: "On the whole, there was six of us who kept to ourselves, we lived together.

"We'd see other ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) girls maybe, RAF girls, but we never mixed with them."

"You just kept yourselves to yourselves", Fiona chipped in as Hazel agreed, before opening up how they used to go for dances with some young American men.

"We did meet Americans at one stage because the Americans used to invite us to their dances."

Eyebrows lifted, Fiona commented: "That sounds fun", as Hazel continued: "And they'd form two lines and walk down the middle and they'd pick out the one they wanted."

"What to dance with?" Fiona asked, laughing when Hazel confirmed.

She then elaborated: "Then they'd present us with a corsage and a pair of nylons [tights]. We'd never had nylons before!"

"So we used to go to these dances. After that, there were other things they wanted which we weren't prepared to give", Hazel added, much to Fiona's amusement.

With a smirk, the host replied: "I get the general idea", as Hazel cheekily commented: "I think you do!"
