The Central government has extended the tenure of Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, the Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner, and appointed IPS officer Praveen Vashista as the new Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to a government order from the Ministry of Personnel, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Narayan’s central deputation tenure. The 1995-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from Uttar Pradesh will now continue his role until August 4, 2026, or until further orders, whichever comes first. Narayan's responsibilities as Census Commissioner are particularly significant as the nation prepares for its next census.
Meanwhile, the Committee has also appointed Praveen Vashista, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as the new Special Secretary for Internal Security in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Vashista will take over from Sivagami Sundari Nanda, who is set to retire on December 31, 2024. His term will extend until July 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Vashista brings with him a wealth of experience in law enforcement and internal security, and his expertise is expected to be pivotal in navigating the country's dynamic security challenges.
