If your bike is having trouble starting or the mileage has dropped, the reason may be a bad spark plug. Know how you can check the plug yourself without the help of a mechanic. Identify whether the plug is bad or good by signs like color, electrode gap and resistance. Also know the reasons for plug getting damaged and easy ways to keep it safe for a long time.
Bike spark plug tip: The correct performance of a motorcycle engine depends on the spark plug. If the plug gets damaged, the engine does not work properly, mileage reduces and there is difficulty in starting. In such a situation, by checking the plug, it can be found out which plug is shorted or damaged. If you also want to check the plug yourself without a mechanic, then let us tell you how you can do this.
By looking at the colorGenerally the color of the plug is light brown or grey. If the color of the plug is like this, then it is fine. If the plug is black, it means that the engine is burning more fuel or the air filter is bad. If the plug looks white or burnt, then it is a sign of overheating or low fuel.
Checking the electrodesThe distance between the electrodes of the plug should be correct (usually 0.6-0.9 mm). If it is stretched too much or broken, the plug is bad. Also check the resistance of the plug with a multimeter. If no resistance is seen, the plug is shorted. If you find any such signs, you should replace the plug.
Why does the plug go bad?- Poor fuel mixture: Too rich or lean a mixture can cause a burnt plug.
- Dirty air filter: If the air filter is clogged, carbon deposits form on the plug.
- Plug with wrong heat range: If the heat range of the plug is not suitable for the bike, it may get damaged quickly.
- Ignition system failure: Weak spark or a bad ignition coil can also cause a bad plug.
If you want the plug to work properly, keep cleaning and checking it regularly. Also, use the correct grade of plug recommended by the manufacturer. Apart from this, keep the air filter and fuel system clean. Get the engine serviced from time to time. If the plug is getting damaged repeatedly, get the engine thoroughly checked by a good mechanic. A good plug improves both the performance and life of the bike.
