Met Office issue Amber wind warning as 'injuries and danger to life' gales likely in UK this weekend

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for aggressive winds with 'injuries and danger to life' likely as Storm Ashley batters the UK this weekend.

Brits have been urged to protect their properties and people from harm as gusts of up to 80mph and high spring tides will likely cause "injuries and danger to life". Those in impacted areas also likey to face damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs - as well as large waves and beach material being thrown around, posing a risk of "danger to life".

The forecaster warned: "Storm Ashley will bring a period of strong winds to much of the west of on Sunday and into Monday, with strongest winds expected within the Amber warning area.

"Parts of western Scotland are likely to see gusts of 70-80 mph at times on Sunday afternoon, before winds ease through the evening and overnight. The winds coincide with high spring tides and large waves which may lead to a greater risk of disruption along coasts."

"If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

Storm Ashley will bring "a good chance" of power cuts, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage. Damage to buildings, longer journey times and cancellations are also likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected. Some roads and bridges will close as the storm ramps up.

The Met Office says injuries and danger to life will be "likely" from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.

The has warned Brits to check for loose items outside their homes and prepare to secure them in advance. Bins, garden furniture, trampolines and tents, as well as sheds, and fences should be secured ahead of the storm.
