The King and Queen have released a new portrait in Rome to commemorate their 20th wedding anniversary and start of their four day state visit to Italy.

Charles and Camilla celebrate their anniversary on Wednesday where they will be guests of honour at a state banquet at the Palazzo Quirinale, hosted by Italian president Sergio Mattarella. The royal couple are staying at Villa Wolkonsky, the official residence of the British ambassador in Rome during their stay. While in Rome the happy couple posed for snaps that have been shared for the public. The three photos were taken today at Willa Wolkonsy, in Rome.

In a personal post on the social media pages, the King and Queen wrote: “As we begin our first visit to Italy as King and Queen, we are so looking forward to celebrating our twentieth wedding anniversary in such a special place and with such wonderful people! A presto, Roma e Ravenna! (Meaning see you soon!)."

The couple touched down at Ciampino airport where they were greeted by the Mediterranean sunshine and a guard of honour to meet them. The UK ambassador to Italy, Lord Llewellyn, was part of the welcoming party.

"This state visit comes at a key moment," Lord Llewellyn said. "As we reset our relations with our European partners." The state visit comes as the UK carries out its charm offensive with European allies amid uncertainty in the global order that has lasted decades.

Italy is the UK's ninth largest trading partner and is popular with tourists from across the country with Rome being a key destination. There was an acknowledgement of Canada as well, which has been the target of an increasingly predatory administration.

The ambassador said the King would also represent Canada as its official head of state, with tributes being paid to Canadian forces who liberated Italy from fascism during WW2.

The state visit had intended to include the Vatican where the King was due to attend several events. These have since been cancelled due to the Pope's ill health.
