Best time to cut the grass in autumn - keep your lawn healthy all year round

Send Push

Autumn lawn care is crucial for a lush green carpet all year round.

To maintain that postcard-perfect turf in September and October, regular upkeep not only keeps blades of grass robust but also wards off weeds. But when it comes to mowing frequency and timing, it can be difficult to know what's best. Gardening expert Lucy Rhead from Gtech says: "The best time to cut your grass in autumn is in the mid-to-late morning. The idea is to avoid cutting it too early when the morning dew makes the grass wet, but not too late in the evening either.

"This is because the grass needs time to recover before the nighttime chill sets in." Grass growth slacks off as the days grow shorter, meaning you can ease off the mowing duties. Lucy's top tip: switch to a fortnightly trim schedule to keep your lawn in tip-top shape – just tweak the mower's blades up to 4cm for that crisp cut. And don't forget those weeds, reports the Express.

Autumn is prime time for weeding; zap them with weed killer, but not during a frost. Lastly, Lucy advises steering clear of frosted greens to prevent unsightly brown spots after thawing. Gardeners, take note: it's wise to steer clear of tending to your garden when it's frozen, including lawn mowing, fertilising, or "anything of the sort" - doing so can harm the grass and potentially hinder its growth in future seasons. She further advised: "Choosing the best lawnmower for your garden is also important.

"For instance, if you find your garden is too big for the wire of the lawnmower to stretch across, or you're looking for an eco-friendly option, then a cordless lawnmower could be the one for you. So, cold weather might give you a bit more to think about when it comes to tending your lawn, but it definitely doesn't mean you need to wait until the weather heats up to keep your garden lush and healthy."
