Barcelona win La Liga title but horror car incident overshadows Espanyol victory

Barcelona have won the Spanish title after beating Espanyol courtesy of another moment of magic from their conjurer-in-chief, Lamine Yamal. The result means Carlo Ancelotti will bow out at without winning a major trophy this season.

Hansi Flick's side headed into Thursday night's clash knowing that a win would clinch the crown after their title rivals completed a late turnaround against Mallorca 24 hours eariler to stay in touch.

But the evening was marred by a shocking incident outside the stadium, with local reports saying 13 people suffered minor injuries.

The incident led to the game being halted briefly before play resumed. And while the scores were level at the break, Barca's boy wonder stepped up to break the deadlock in style in the 53rd minute.

Fermin Lopez then struck in the 96th minute after being teed up Yamal to settle any late nerves on a golden night for Barca.

Espanyol did what they could to foil their foe's title party by turning on the sprinklers, but that did not deter Barca from celebrating.

The result means Ancelotti's final weeks at the Bernabeu will end with a whimper; the Italian has been announced as the new head coach of the Brazil national team and will depart before Los Blancos jet off to the Club World Cup next month.

Speaking earlier this week he said: "From 26 May onwards, I'll be Brazil's coach. It's a very important challenge, but I want to finish the final stretch of this fantastic adventure here well.

"I never had problems with Real and never will have problems with Real. It's a club that lives dearly in my heart, but everything in life has a date to end.

"I couldn't be Madrid coach for the rest of my life. It comes to an end for many reasons. The club may need a new impetus. I'm not making a big deal out of it.

"A thousand thanks to this club. And we'll carry on. I'll always be a Madrid fan. It's the end of an era. Spectacular. I never thought I'd coach Madrid for six years, and now it's happened."
