What to do if you spot a snake in Goa during the monsoons

The heavy rains during the past few days have brought Goans a respite from the heat and humidity, nourished fields, and filled the wells. But, the showers have also displaced reptiles from their natural habitats.

This is the main reason why there is an increase in snake sightings in gardens, compounds and even homes these days.

WATCH FROM A DISTANCE

For most people, the sight of a snake can instantly trigger fear. However, Charan Desai, a member of Wildlife Rescue and Research, says that it is always advisable to stay calm if you spot a snake.

“The first scientific or practical response for such incidents and cases is very ,” says Charan. “Observe the snake.”

“If the snake is inside your house and there is no outlet for it, call a rescuer. If the snake is outside the house and there is space or a way for it to escape — let it. If the snake is not moving or stuck somewhere, you can call a rescuer,” he advises.

Charan recalls an incident where he once received a call from a lady who said there was a snake in her cupboard.

“We have found snakes in weird places in houses, sometimes even in toilets. The first thing which can be done is to call any agency, such as 108, fire forces or even the police department. Our numbers are registered with all the emergency services in Goa,” says Charan.

"Once the calls are done, wait for help to come. Until then, carefully observe the snake,” he adds.

WHY DO SNAKES ENTER HOMES?

When it comes to about snakes, the list is endless, especially the common one that they enter homes to take revenge.

However, Charan clarifies that during a heavy downpour, snakes take refuge in houses, or structures around the house, like garages, pump houses, water meters and so on.

“Snakes generally don't enter houses deliberately. They come in by accident, or while following prey, and often end up getting trapped inside the ,” he says.

The rescuers use the right equipment with minimum handling. A calm rescuer knows how to calm an agitated snake.

“If you try to harm the snake or if you try to hit it, it is very likely to strike back. If the snake is venomous, it can attack you. So, to avoid such situations, it is advisable to ask for expert help.”
