The sudden demise of actress and former Bigg Boss 13 contestant Shefali Jariwala has left fans shocked and heartbroken. While initial reports claimed cardiac arrest as the cause of death, fresh reports suggest that the actress may have succumbed to complications arising from an anti-ageing injection she allegedly took on the day of her death on June 27. To understand the possible medical implications of such treatments, The Free Press Journal got in touch with senior dermatologist Dr. Jaishree Sharad, who has been practicing for over two decades and is widely regarded as a skin expert in the field of aesthetic dermatology.
Offering her condolences, Dr. Jaishree responded to the emerging reports. “I thought it was cardiac arrest, that’s what I had read. I’m not aware of this injection thing, but IV injections, especially for anti-ageing, are not regulated by any medical government body. They’re not FDA-approved or CE-approved. We don’t even know what ingredients are in most of these injections available today. Social media glamorizes them and influencers promote them, so people just think they’re safe. But in the name of anti-ageing, you can sell anything today. These are unregulated drugs, and we don’t know the batch, the composition, or even if what they claim is inside is actually there. And you’re putting it directly into your blood, there’s no filter," she said.

When asked whether such injections could be the reason behind Shefali's sudden death, Dr. Jaishree said, “Unless you have a forensic report, you can’t say whether this is what killed her. But putting that aside, yes, an anti-ageing injection can lower BP. It can cause an electrolyte imbalance, and something like low potassium can take your life. Anaphylaxis, cardiac issues — these are very real risks. You need to be very cautious because these are unregulated drugs, easily available, with no evidence or scientific data. People watch a reel and blindly follow trends. It’s a sad state of affairs.”
The conversation also turned to Shefali’s smoking habits, which were evident during her stint on Bigg Boss 13, and whether such lifestyle choices can impact the skin to the point where people seek drastic measures. Dr. Jaishree explained, “Of course, it’s true that smoking damages the skin. Nicotine increases free radicals in your body, degrades collagen and elastin fibers, and causes wrinkles and skin laxity. It also increases melanin, leading to blotchy skin, dark circles, and dark lips. Smoking accelerates ageing, not just of the body, but also of the skin. If you’re in the business where your appearance matters, you should follow a good skincare routine, eat healthy, and avoid sinisters like smoking and alcohol.”

She also addressed comparisons being drawn with late actress Sridevi’s death, which was officially attributed to accidental drowning, but speculated to be linked to medications and aesthetic procedures. “Anything that you overdo will impact you — even vitamins. It comes down to seeing a qualified, ethical doctor who knows proper dosage, intervals, and whether a drug is legal or evidence-based. If you do it the right way, there’s no problem. But shortcuts based on social media and unregulated products? You will bear the consequences eventually.”

As investigations continue into Shefali’s untimely passing, Dr. Jaishree’s words serve as a sobering reminder to approach aesthetic treatments with caution and medical supervision, especially in a world where beauty trends can turn dangerously unregulated.
