Mumbai: In a significant crackdown, the Crime Branch Unit 5 of Mumbai Police has uncovered a major drug trafficking operation in Jogeshwari West, seizing 2 kilograms of mephedrone (MD), a banned synthetic drug valued at Rs 4 crore in the international market. Two individuals involved in the drug trade have been arrested.
According to information from the Crime Branch, the operation took place around 8:30 PM on May 15, when a police team, acting on instructions from senior officers, was patrolling the Amboli area. While monitoring activity near SV Road, Senior Police Inspector Ghanshyam Nair and his team noticed two suspicious individuals standing near the Jogeshwari bus depot.
Upon being questioned and searched, the duo was found to be in possession of 2 kg of MD. The suspects were immediately taken into custody, and a case was registered against them under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Amboli Police Station.
A senior official confirmed that investigations are underway to trace the origin of the seized drugs and identify the intended recipients. The Crime Branch is also probing a larger network operating in Mumbai and surrounding regions suspected of being involved in the trafficking and distribution of mephedrone.
This comes just days after police seized Rs 6 crore worth of MD in a similar bust in Govandi, highlighting the widening scope of synthetic drug trafficking in the city.
