Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath last year appeared on his brother Nikhil Kamath's popular podcast WTF, where the brothers engaged in a candid conversation that shed light on both personal and professional aspects of their lives. Among the guests were also Myntra co-founder Mukesh Bansal and Suniel Shetty. During the conversation, a topic that stood out was Nithin Kamath’s advice on mental health, offering insights that were both personal and practical.

During the podcast, Nithin Kamath emphasized the importance of maintaining good mental health, drawing from his own experiences. “Mental health is something I care about quite a bit,” he said. “For me, it’s about not keeping anything in my mind—just letting it out.” Nithin explained that holding onto thoughts and emotions only complicates matters, encouraging a more open approach to dealing with personal issues.

Nikhil Kamath, the younger of the two, shared an instance from his life where Nithin’s advice played a crucial role. Playfully reflecting on the time during the COVID-19 lockdown, Nikhil spoke about a breakup he went through while living with his brother. “We both were in one house together and we had broken up at that point of time. So Nithin's advice to me: I'm like going through a breakup, we're like getting reasonably intoxicated every night for 2 months,” Nikhil said.

Nithin Kamath's Advice to Nikhil

Nithin’s response to Nikhil’s situation was simple: “You have to cry. You don't have to mean it, do drama,” Nithin advised. He encouraged Nikhil to express his feelings, believing that releasing emotions would help alleviate the burden. Nikhil humorously recounted how his brother suggested he even pretend to cry if necessary, but the core message remained clear—opening up is essential to mental well-being.

Nithin Kamath also discussed two key factors that have brought a sense of freedom into his life. “One is, of course, money,” he acknowledged, “and the second is not keeping anything in my mind. Just getting it out there.” He stressed that postponing conversations or internalizing emotions only complicates situations further, advocating for open communication and emotional expression as essential tools for maintaining mental clarity.
