Suriya’s newly released film Retro kicked off its theatrical journey with considerable buzz, emerging as one of the most awaited Tamil movies of 2025. The actor takes on a gritty avatar in this romantic action-drama, portraying the character of Paarivel Kannan, better known as Paari — a local gangster with a complex past.
According to recent data shared by Sacnilk.com, Retro earned a robust Rs 20 crore on its debut day across India. While this figure falls slightly short compared to the Rs 22 crore opening of Suriya’s previous film Kanguva, the response to Retro has been predominantly favorable. Industry experts predict the film will see growth over the extended weekend, especially with the positive word-of-mouth spreading rapidly among audiences.
Directed and penned by Karthik Subbaraj, the movie has already made a significant mark on its opening day. Tamil Nadu, in particular, saw impressive footfalls, with the film registering a solid 79.35% occupancy across cinemas on Thursday. Morning screenings clocked in at 75.91% occupancy, while afternoon shows peaked at 83.91%. Evening showings saw a minor dip, landing at 78.23%, but still maintained strong performance overall.
In terms of competition, Retro has surged ahead of its box office rival HIT 3, starring Nani. While HIT 3 has garnered ₹18 crore so far, it trails behind Suriya’s film, which currently holds the upper hand in terms of collections and audience reception.
