Body image is an ongoing conversation in many industries, with public figures often under intense scrutiny for their appearance. In a candid conversation with Humans of Bombay, actress Priyamani opened up about her personal journey with body image and the internal battles she faced behind the camera. Known for her impressive performances in projects like The Family Man, Jawan and a brief dance stint with Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express, the actress recently shared how she dealt with the body image pressure.
In a candid conversation with Humans of Bombay, actress Priyamani opened up about her journey with body image and the silent battles she faced off-screen. She recalled a time when she had gained significant weight, reaching around 64–65 kilos, but wasn’t particularly concerned about how she looked on camera. “You couldn’t really tell on screen at that time,” she said. However, looking back, she admits her face had visibly changed due to the weight gain.
Priyamani revealed that the weight gain was linked to an internal health issue, one that led her to consult several doctors before eventually starting her weight-loss journey. Despite the drastic physical changes, she’s grateful she never felt pressured by the industry to look a certain way. In fact, she says most people, including those she worked with, were comfortable with how she looked.
Later, when she lost a lot of weight, the reactions changed. While Priyamani felt happy and confident seeing herself on screen, some around her, including family, expressed concern that she appeared “too thin.” Audience feedback even suggested she should put on a little more weight. But the actress took it all in stride, balancing how she felt internally with what others saw externally, and choosing what worked best for her body and self-esteem.
Priyamani’s upcoming work
She is currently gearing up for Jana Nayagan opposite Thalapathy Vijay and Pooja Hegde. She will also reprise her role as Suchi in the upcoming season of The Family Man.
