New Delhi: BJP chief JP Nadda on Friday appointed Rajya Sabha member Aditya Prasad Sahu as working president of the party's Jharkhand unit, replacing Ravindra Kumar Rai. Sahu is an OBC leader who has risen from the grassroots.

BJP is in the Opposition in Jharkhand which is ruled by the JMM-Congress combine. The party has kept the caste combination in mind while choosing Sahu as the state unit chief. Veteran leader Babulal Marandi, a prominent tribal face and former CM, is leader of the Opposition in Jharkhand.

Sahu hails from Ranchi rural and started his career in 2009 at the district level. He was a general secretary of the BJP state unit before his elevation to the post of state president. Sahu comes from the backward Sudi caste that has traditionally been engaged in liquor trade and money-lending.

He is an academic who worked as a lecturer at the RTC College in Ranchi along with being a BJP worker. Sahu was elected to the Rajya Sabha in July 2022. He is a member of Parliament's Consultative Committee on Panchayati Raj.
