November 2 was a historic day for Indian fans to remember as the women’s team created history. Harmanpreet Kaur’s ladies defeated South Africa in the final by 52 runs to win the Women’s World Cup for the first time. After losing in the final twice, the third time proved to be a charm for the Women in Blue.
A New Women’s World Cup WinnerIndia posted 298/7 with Shafali Verma top-scoring with 87. In reply, South Africa made 246 and Deepti Sharma led the way for the bowlers with 5/39. India denied South Africa what would have also been their maiden title. But a new champion was named as neither of these teams had won the World Cup before this. What made this extra special was the fact that India won on home soil, in front of their fans. Navi Mumbai was in celebration mode.

The hosts had a mixed tournament until they reached the semis. They began with wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan before a hat-trick of losses to South Africa, Australia and England. A crucial win over New Zealand saw them through to the last four. A no-result vs Bangladesh did not impact their position on the points table.
In the semis, India faced Australia and pulled off a record-run chase thanks to Jemimah Rodrigues’ century to qualify for the final. Smriti Mandhana also delivered in the crucial game vs New Zealand and found form vs Australia and England earlier on to peak at the right time.

India clinically won the final to find themselves in the history books. The demons of the 2017 loss have finally been vanquished. It was a game that should have been won. But fast forward to 2025, India have done one better. For South Africa, it was heartbreak as they faltered at the final hurdle.
This is a big step for women’s cricket in India. They are the toast of the nation as the country celebrates their conquest on the biggest stage. Here’s to more titles in the years to come. The Women in Blue are shining bright and may they keep on shining.
