A woman was stunned after ripping up the carpets in her new home and finding a “creepy” symbol carved into the floorboards.

Moving into a can bring all manner of stress and excitement. There’s the mental load of arranging viewings around work, and hobbies; the tense wait for the results of the buyer’s survey; the hassle of arranging paperwork and ID checks for ; and all that’s before having to deal with copious cardboard boxes and packing woes.

Still, once you’re in your new home and you’re starting to put your stamp on it, the grief and burden of the move quickly becomes a distant memory. That is, unless you find a potentially “satanic” symbol carved into your floor.

This was the case for Maey Mary, who shared the shocking find in a public post in the popular group, . To its 247.8K members, Maey shared a series of photos of her unearthed floorboards, which appear to show a pentacle - a five-pointed star inside a circle - carved into it.

The pentacle is a symbol of Neo-Pagan religions and is commonly used by Wiccans and in paganism. It’s said to represent the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and spirit. It’s also seen by some practitioners as a sign of life and connections.

Captioning the images, Maey simply asked: “Pulled up the carpets in a newly purchased house to find this. What would be your first thought?”

The post was met with a flurry of responses, with more than one thousand comments and reactions. One person shared their course of action if they were confronted with a pentacle in their home: “Sage the home and ask all negative energy be released and invite love and light. Then sand, stain and shine that hardwood up.”

Another quipped: “My first thought was, ‘Yay wood floors!’” While a third said: “It’s not a negative, it’s a protection circle. Just sage your house, open all the windows for a day & decorate knowing you’re following on from some pretty powerful women (or men)”.

One Facebook user commented: “Ahh just refinish the floor and leave the memories of what was there in the saw dust as you blow it out the window”, and another said: “Looks like you had a witch living there. They did a protection circle. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. You can remove it and if it bothers you, sage it.”

But one person advised: “Move” and another urged her to “call a priest”. Several Facebook users were convinced the symbol was a sign of “devil worshippers” or “satan followers”, while others questioned the validity of the post, claiming to have seen the same image in other social media groups.

One sceptic said: “This is someone else’s image that’s been floating around the internet for a while. Why steal it and pass it off as your own.” To which, someone replied: “yep! I saw this picture years ago”. Another said: “This is a repost of someone else’s post. It’s not this poster’s home.” And another added: “No you didn't, this image has been circling the internet for ages”.
