We all love our furry friends, but it's crucial to be mindful of what they're munching on.

Onions are one such culprit. This widely-used vegetable contains a poisonous compound called N-propyl disulfide that can harm red blood cells, potentially leading to anemia and organ failure.

Xylitol is another substance dogs should steer clear of. This natural sugar alcohol is commonly found in plants, including numerous fruits and vegetables.

Dogs should also avoid eating grapes and raisins. They are toxic to dogs and can lead to kidney failure or death, even in small amounts. What's more is, dried versions of the fruit are more likely to cause severe symptoms.

Macadamia nuts can also lead to poisoning. The toxic component within the nut is unknown, but they aren't safe for your pets to be near. Eating just a few nuts can lead to intoxication in a small to medium sized dog.

Chocolate is also off-limits for your beloved canine companions. It contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs.

Dogs can't metabolise these chemicals as efficiently as humans, which can spell trouble for your pets. The toxicity level of chocolate depends on the size of the dog and the type of chocolate consumed.

Darker, more bitter chocolates pose the greatest risk. On the other hand, white chocolate contains minimal theobromine and is generally considered less harmful.
