Millions of Americans have voted in the US Presidential Election to determine the direction of the country for the next four years.
is hoping for a return to the White House with rival Democrat Kamala Harris aiming to make history as the first woman and person of mixed Black and Indian heritage to become President. Across the country Americans have cast their ballots in what political analysts believe will be one of the closest elections in modern American history.
While a clear winner might not be know at the end of the day, results will be tricking in from across the US. Many states where the race will not be close such as firmly Democrat California and stalwart Republican Montana are expected to be called early while so-called swing states might take longer.

The first polls on the East Coast closed at 7am with eyes being focused on Georgia and North Carolina, both battleground states that could indicate the direction of the election. While the Eastern states might give an indication of how the race has gone, they likely won't tell a complete picture.
In 2020, it took four days for Democrat to be declared winner of the Presidential Election due to the tight nature of the voting campaign. But in 2016, Trump was able to declare victory in a comparatively swift few hours.
The longest election delay came in 2000 where George W. Bush was declared the winner after an agonising 35-day wait. The result proved controversial with Democrat Al Gore being widely viewed by many to have won the crucial state of Florida.
Harris and Trump are competing for the that will see them secure the White House for the next four years.
