The Grand Tour's 'Buttons' joke about Richard Hammond explained

The Grand Tour: One for the Road reunited Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May for a grand last hurrah on Amazon Prime, as the ex-Top Gear trio embarked on another legendary journey, brimming with their signature banter and no-holds-barred humour.

During the show's finale, Jeremy Clarkson, 64, couldn't resist taking a playful jab at Richard Hammond, 54, suggesting he'd fit perfectly in a Swindon pantomime. The rib-tickling moment from the September 13 episode, filmed in Zimbabwe, saw the joke snowball into crafting an entire pantomime cast.

Audiences were so intrigued by Jeremy's mention of "Buttons" in reference to Richard, that it sent them scrambling to Google to investigate further.

As the episode unfolded, Richard's car troubles became fodder for more giggles when his vehicle suffered a fuel leak, prompting Jeremy and co-star James to concoct yet another skit about their imagined Swindon panto.

"Why are you helping him," Jeremy quizzed James, to which he wittily replied: "I want him to survive otherwise we can't see him as Buttons in the pantomime."

For those not up to speed on pantomime lore, the character of Buttons is known for being the comical chap in Cinderella who pines for her love unrequitedly, while pitching in around the householdquite the contrast to the dashing Prince Charming, reports the Express.

Seemingly exasperated by the suggestion, Richard snapped at his co-stars: "Oh please! Stop it with the Buttons."

"Oh no we won't," James shot back, hinting that Richard may only have to wait a year before he's treading the boards at the Wyvern.

Despite this, Jeremy countered, claiming: "No, I think he's got enough pride to make him last two years. I think it'll be 2025."

The conversation amongst The Grand Tour gang also threw in names like Ainsley Harriott, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, and Julian Clary as part of their fantasy cast list, not forgetting to mention a matinee carvery treat at Premier Inn.

James, declaring his plans to be a regular audience member, stated: "I hate panto but I'm going to that one."

And indeed, Cinderella will be enchanting audiences in Swindon at the Wyvern Theatre starting Saturday, December 7, through Sunday, January 5.

Gracing the pantomime stage this season are Coronation Street's Lisa George as the Fairy Godmother, Artemis Fowl star Ben Goffe as Buttons and David Ashley donning the garb of Dame Molly Miggins.

The Grand Tour: One For The Road is available to stream now, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
