Rihanna fans have been left gobsmacked after learning the meaning behind her iconic SOS .

It has been 18 years since superstar released the track, and it has since been a staple on many party playlists. But while you might know the lyrics back to front, people are only just realising a huge pattern in the lyrics that they never noticed before.

It comes after songwriter Evan 'Kidd' Bogart appeared on the Behind the Wall podcast with Daniel Wall and spoke about his experience in the music industry. He co-wrote the lyrics to SOS alongside Edward Cobb and Jonathon Rotem. "When I wrote it, I had no idea what I was doing," he confessed.

Evan said that implemented a trick he "thought would be clever" by making all the lyrics in the second verse a tribute to 1980s song titles.

Evan explained: "The whole second verse of that song is 80s song titles strung together as sentences because I thought it'd be super clever."

The songwriter went on to break down a portion of the verse, which includes references to A-Ha‘s Take On Me, Cutting Crew’s (I Just) Died in Your Arms Tonight, Tears For Fears's Head Over Heels, Kim Wilde‘s You Keep Me Hangin’ On and Michael Jackson‘s The Way You Make Me Feel.

"They're all number one songs from the '80s," he added. The interviewer reacted and said: "That's incredible. I had no idea." "No one does," said the genius lyricist.

The lyrics to the song go: "Just your presence and I second guess my sanity/Yes, it's a lesson, it's unfair, you stole my vanity/My tummy's up in knots and when I see you, it gets so hot/My common sense is out the door, can't seem to find the lock/Take on me (Uh-huh), you know inside you feel it right/Take me on, I could just die up in your arms tonight/I melt with you, you got me head over heels (Over heels)/Boy, you keep me hangin' on, the way you make me feel."

After a short clip of the confession was shared on Daniel Wall's TikTok page recently it raked in over 19 million views. People rushed to comment as one said: "That's actually really creative. Pretty cool."

"This is genius," added another. One other commented: "He's a genius. Song titles as lyrics - he created a masterpiece from masterpieces."

One other said: "Brilliant. Cannot explain how much more that makes me love this song." "I love this song so much more now," said another individual who didn't realise the secret behind the song.

Fans are still eagerly awaiting news of bringing out new music after her last album was released in 2016. She has since gone on to have success with her lingerie brand Savage Fenty, makeup empire Fenty, and has welcomed two children named RZA and Riot with ASAP Rocky. The Bring It On star revealed her second during her 2023 Superbowl performance.

The mum-of-two gave fans some hope earlier this year when she opened up about plans to release a ninth studio album. She told Entertainment Tonight: "I'm rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I put all that stuff aside, and now I'm prepared to go back in the studio."
