Much has been made this week of the Prince of Wales entering a new era – one which will be cause-driven and statesmanlike as he carves out a new role within the Royal Family. He has spoken of planet-saving ideas around his Earthshot Prize awards. And he has highlighted the need for more urgency and collaboration with his homelessness project.

He will have undoubtedly experienced feelings of shock and hopelessness as his loved ones were told the enormity of their situation. And only after that would he have come to realise that his role of supporter and carer, especially for his three young children, was needed more than ever.

As the Princess and King enter new phases of their recovery, William could use his platform to good effect. Not only to draw attention to the challenges cancer poses but also to highlight the need for resources to help families deal with such devastating diagnoses.

One hopes better things will be on the horizon for them all.
