Jose Mourinho mercilessly mocked by Galatasaray after walking out of first Istanbul derby

Jose Mourinho has been savaged on social media after taking defeat very badly in his first Istanbul derby.

Mourinho took over as Fenerbahce manager in the summer, promising to return the club to the top of the Turkish Super Lig. But after six games, they are in the same place they finished last season – second, behind Istanbul rivals Galatasaray.

The two sides faced off on Saturday in a crunch game and it didn’t go to plan for Mourinho at all. Galatasray found themselves 2-0 up after just 28 minutes thanks to a Dominik Livakovic own goal and a strike from Dries Mertens, who netted from Victor Osimhen’s chested knock-down.

And although Super Lig top scorer Edin Dzeko got a goal back after the break, it came after Gala had already effectively sealed the away win through Gabriel Sara. Mourinho was his typical animated self on the touchline, arguing every decision and he was so worked up by the time the whistle blew that he decided to head off without completing his post-match media duties.

He won’t have been amused by the posts by Galatasray’s club account on Twitter, either. They took great pleasure in mocking the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, playing on his ‘Special One’ nickname with a few posts.

One, from their English language account, showed a miserable Mourinho on the sidelines alongside grinning Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk with the caption “Winning One”. Another read “seems like we're cooking a special one tonight” with a meal and hand-over-mouth laughing emoji.

The Turkish language account went even further, mocking up a book entitled “The Crying One” with the caption “On sale in stores around Kadikoy” – the area of Istanbul which is home to Fenerbahce. Another was a short video with a pinboard of Mourinho and Fenerbahce players, with the photos falling off to reveal Buruk. The caption had “Mourinho Universe” crossed out and “Okan Buruk rules” replacing it.

Mourinho gave it the big sell when it took over at Fenerbahce in June. “I promise you from this moment, I belong to your family,” he said. “This shirt is my skin. Football is passion and there is no better place to feel that passion. Since the moment I met the president, I wanted to play for you because you are the soul of the football club.

"I want to be the coach of all of you. I want to work in Turkish football. I want to help the Turkish league. But the most important thing for me is Fenerbahce. From the moment I sign my contract, your dreams are now my dreams.”

The club backed him by bringing in Sofyan Amrabat, Youssef En-Nesyri, Caglar Soyuncu and Allan Saint-Maximin, but they are still behind Galatasaray. Mourinho also suffered an early blow when defeat against Lille in the Champions League play-offs meant the club had to settle for the Europa League.
