George Baldock dead: Greek FA make request to UEFA ahead of England match

The Greek Football Federation have asked for permission to wear black armbands against England to honour George Baldock .

It was confirmed on Wednesday night that Baldock had passed away at the age of 31 after he was in Glyfada, a suburb south of Athens.

The former defender won 12 caps for the Greek national team before his untimely death and it has emerged that they have requested the black armbands to pay their respects when they play at Wembley on Thursday night.

A statement was also released paying tribute to Baldock, as well as offering condolences to his devastated family. The statement read: "With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.

"There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family."

England also penned a tribute to Baldock on the eve of their meeting with . It read: "We're extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock. George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece – our opponents on Thursday night. We're thinking of George's family, friends and team-mates at club and country at this difficult time."

Baldock spent seven years at Sheffield United between 2017 and 2024 before moving to Greece to join Panathinaikos in the summer.

The right-back made over 200 appearances for Sheffield United in total and was a fixture in the team that recorded a top half finish during their first year back in the in the 2019/20 campaign.

The Blades were among those to pay tribute to Baldock following confirmation of his death. They wrote: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

Baldock's family also released a statement confirming the tragic news. They wrote: "We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss. We ask please that the media respect our privacy at this time."
