Flood warnings issued across UK as residents urged to 'act now' before horror thunderstorms

Dozens of flood alerts and warnings are in place - as up to 80mm of rain is set to barrel across the country this weekend.

Four weather warnings have been issued across three days, including today, as the Met Office expects downpours and thunderstorms will blight our weekend.

Parts of Wales and the Midlands are feared to see the heaviest rainfall, particularly throughout Sunday. Nine flood warnings, and dozens of less severe flood alerts are in place, the Environment Agency says. Four of the warnings concern waterways across the Southwest of England, including two sections of the Somerset coast.

The Environment Agency says anyone who lives near the following places should "act now" ahead of the rain, as the heaviest is largely expected on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's weather warning reads up to 80mm of rain is forecast in parts. The Met Office says the weather could cause a loss of power to homes and businesses, especially across Wales and Southwest of England.

"Thundery downpours have developed across parts of southern England, and will last into Friday evening, bringing frequent lightning, gusty winds, hail, and spells of heavy rain," Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Jason Kelly, said.

"The risk of thunderstorms persists into the weekend with potentially longer spells of heavy rain for some along with a continued risk of hail and lightning accompanying the most intense storms. Parts of the Midlands, southern England and east Wales appear at greatest risk of seeing these conditions.

"The warnings cover the areas of the country most at risk of seeing thunderstorms but not everyone within a warning area will experience a thunderstorm. For many much of the time it will remain dry.”

The Tyne estuary in Tyne and Wear is subject to a flood alert, despite being in the north of England, some distance from any of the weather warnings. Two flood warnings have been issued in Wales, both for points along the Wye estuary in the east of the nation. No warnings or alerts are in place across Northern Ireland or Scotland currently.
