Brits have faced a washout over the past few days with a month's worth of rain falling in just one morning causing travel chaos, extensive disruption and school closures.

Dozens of flood warnings and alerts were issued after an estimated 2.4 inches of rain fell in the South East between midnight and 8am today. A flood alert map for the UK showed 85 warnings and alerts near Bristol, the Midlands, Home Counties, and London.

Flood warnings were in place for numerous rivers across England amid fears water levels could rise significantly from the afternoon into the night. Residents or visitors to the affected areas were warned to avoid using low lying footpaths and not to drive through the flood water.

The warnings and alerts will be updated tomorrow, according to the government's Flooding Service.

Where can I see flood alerts?

A full list of flood alerts can be seen via the government's check for flooding service, which can be found here. The majority of flood alerts are recorded in the South East of England and the Midlands.

It comes after a deluge of rain and thunderstorms hammered the UK over the weekend, leaving many Brits facing miserable conditions.

Dramatic images showed London commuters struggle as the Metropolitan Line, Piccadilly Line and District Line were all impacted by flooding. At least three schools in Gloucestershire were closed after water gushed into the buildings on Friday.

The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings from Bath to Milton Keynes in England. The rain warning "is expected to produce some flooding and travel disruption," according to the Met Office.

In its forecast for tonight and Tuesday, the Met Office said: "Heavy rain will ease from the west across England and parts of Wales. Meanwhile, showery rain will extend south across northern and central parts of Scotland. Otherwise it will be a rather cloudy night with the odd light shower.

"Showery rain will affect Scotland tomorrow, extending to parts of northern England later. Elsewhere it will be a brighter, though fresher day than on Monday, with a few showers developing."
