Andy Robertson has lifted the lid on how the Liverpool dressing room has enjoyed working with Arne Slot so far during the Dutchman's first season at Anfield — explaining that the players are loving the process of getting used to a new style.
"It changes every single game in terms of the positioning in terms of what Arne wants from you," Robertson explained to reporters including from Liverpool.com. "I’m embracing it. I’m enjoying it. We knew there was going to be a change after seven years of playing in a similar way.
"It worked really well and we all enjoyed it but we knew a new manager would come in and change things and make it different. I’ve enjoyed the change. I’ve embraced it. I think I’ve done well at it and I’ve grown into it.
"The positioning all over the pitch, attacking and defending is different. You can see the older lads are in full flow. You can see we know what he wants from us. We’re doing what the manager wants from us and the results have been relatively good."
As it stands, Liverpool is sitting on top of the Premier League table but Robertson, Slot, Virgil van Dijk and others have all played down the importance of that just six matches into the new era. "December is always a crucial month," Van Dijk told reporters. "The teams who go through that well, winning games and having no injuries, have a big chance to be successful. Let's see."
"Who knows? You never know," Robertson says. "I don’t think teams look at the table. There are far too many games ahead of you. I think there’s a lot of teams looking good at the minute. You know by Christmas time who is in it, and what kind of position you lie in. We just have to take it game by game, result by result. Then, when it gets to the nitty-gritty we’ll see who’s in it.
"We don’t leave any stone unturned. The staff have been really good at making us prepared for every single game, making sure we are as fresh as possible. It’s the start of a hectic period for us. We’ve got games every three days and it won’t end until god-knows-when. Let’s see how we are in the months to come when it really ramps up."
Robertson confirmed that he was taken off against Wolves purely as a precaution. There is no lasting damage to his ankle despite that knock that saw Joe Gomez replace him and the left-back expects to be back in time to be available for selection against Bologna in the Champions League midweek.
"It's never easy when you come here," Robertson said of beating Wolves. "I think we have always had difficult afternoons here. I can’t think of an easy afternoon that we’ve had. I think we could have played better but it's all about the result. I think we deserve the points in the end.
"I thought we were defensively solid until [the equalizer]. Then we make a mistake and get punished for it. That’s what that league does. But it’s so imoprtant to come back quickly because then they’d go into a lower block and try to hit us quickly on the counter-attack. So important do bounce back quickly. I think we controlled it pretty well after that."
